Biebl® Bio-based 1,3-Propanediol: A Naturally Derived Ingredient Excelling in Safety and Skin Feel

C1 LIFE  Biebl® Bio-based 1,3-Propanediol is a fully bio-based material and the world’s 1st"3- Non" bio-1,3-PDO, derived from non-GMO, non-food carbon sources, and non-pathogenic bacterial fermentation. Developed through Sino-German innovative bio-synthesis technology, it ensures high biosafety, production safety, food crop independence, and low carbon emissions.

The process also features "4-Free" advantages: free aeration, free intense stirring, free high-temperature sterilization, and free expensive nutrients. Recognized as "world-leading" in Guangdong’s scientific achievement appraisal, it has obtained international certifications including USDA, RSPO, COSMOS, REACH, and HALAL.

In cosmetic ingredients, safety and skin feel are key benchmarks for quality. As a green, natural cosmetic raw material, Biebl® bio-based 1,3-PDO excels in both aspects, gaining widespread attention. To fully evaluate its application value in cosmetics, this study systematically assesses its safety, skin compatibility, and functional performance through a three-dimensional testing framework—cytotoxicity tests, patch tests, and sensory evaluations

The data indicates that compared to other commonly used polyols, 1,3-PDO exhibits lower cytotoxicity. This suggests that in both cosmetic production and application, 1,3-PDO poses minimal potential harm to human cells, making it a safer and more reliable choice for formulation. Its favorable safety profile aligns well with the industry's demand for mild yet effective ingredients in skincare and personal care products.

Patch Test

Patch test results demonstrate that even at high concentrations, 1,3-PDO does not exhibit significant irritation. This confirms its excellent skin compatibility, making it suitable for a wide range of cosmetic applications—particularly in leave-on skincare products such as face creams, lotions, and emulsions that require prolonged skin contact. Its mildness ensures both safety and performance in formulations designed for sensitive skin.

Test results indicate that skincare emulsion formulations containing 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO) effectively reduce the sticky feeling associated with high glycerol concentrations. In consumer trials, this translated to a noticeably lightweight, non-sticky skin feel, significantly enhancing the overall user experience. From a formulation optimization perspective, 1,3-PDO offers cosmetic chemists an excellent solution for refining product texture, enabling the development of skincare products that better align with consumer preferences for fast-absorbing, comfortable wear. This makes it a valuable ingredient for improving both performance and market appeal.

Testing has shown that shampoo formulations containing 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO) deliver a superior user experience. After washing with these shampoos, consumers report enhanced hydration, freshness, and smoothness in their hair. From a manufacturing standpoint, the incorporation of 1,3-PDO does not complicate the production process, demonstrating excellent compatibility and ease of use. This makes it an ideal functional ingredient for shampoo manufacturers seeking to improve product performance while maintaining efficient production workflows. Its multifunctional benefits—combining conditioning effects with formulation stability—make it a smart choice for next-generation hair care products.
